Waltzing Matilda Centre

50 Elderslie Street, Winton, QLD

If there is one song that lives in the heart of all Australians, it is “Waltzing Matilda”…

Welcome to the Waltzing Matilda Centre!

Winton’s Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Outback Queensland tells the story of Waltzing Matilda, a song that lives in the hearts of all Australians as our unofficial anthem and the first museum in the world dedicated to a song.

The original centre, history and artefacts were destroyed by a fire in 2015. From the ashes on the 20 April, 2018 the Waltzing Matilda Centre was reborn.

The Waltzing Matilda Centre is a museum so steeped in Australiana that the architecture itself references the landscape and history of the local region. The building incorporates the Waltzing Matilda legend, the Qantas origins, Aboriginal cultural history, the opal mining, events such as the Shearers’ Strike and the dinosaur trail.

The museum tells the story of Waltzing Matilda, the Exhibition space tells the story of WW1, the Art Gallery displays travelling exhibitions, the Qantilda Museum tells the story and history of the Winton Shire and the birth of Qantas and the Tuckerbox Café provides the finest coffee in town.

Tour groups and schools are catered for with packages.
