Population: 1,500

Location: Barcaldine Region

Situated at the crossroads of the Landsborough and Capricorn Highways, Barcaldine is a town filled with history, colour and a strong representation of aboriginal culture. It is often referred to as the Garden City of the West, due to its beautiful gardens, Bougainvillea Heritage Trail, wide tree-lined streets and the well known Tree of Knowledge structure. As the historical site of the 1891 Shearers’ Strike that was sadly poisoned in 2006, this peculiar ‘tree’ it is now a traffic-stopping memorial located in the towns main street. When leaving or returning from the towns of Longreach, Emerald or Blackall, be welcomed by locals at the many main street ‘true-blue’ pubs and eclectic mix of modern and historical buildings.

The Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge Festival is the towns biggest event and invites locals and travellers from all over the state to participate in its festivities. The May Day Parade pictured above is just one of these festivities. Photography by Aaron Skinn.
