1. Walk down the red carpet at The Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival.

Take a trip to Australia’s ‘Outback Hollywood’ and join in on the 9-day movie marathon celebrating “Women in Film”. Watch the stars of the screen in premiers, the latest flicks and award-winning short films under the starry night sky in Winton’s open-air Royal Theatre! Movie buffs can grab some unlimited* popcorn (Click here to find out more) and sit back and relax under the stars on the theatres original canvas seats. The festival also offers masterclasses with film industry leaders, location tours, live entertainment and creative activities for the kids.

2. Take on the Simpson Desert at Australia’s first and only 250km multiday race!

Calling all running, trekking and adventure hiking enthusiasts! Experience the Outback in a way like no other than the Big Red Run. Not for the faint-hearted, The Big Red Run is a 250km 6 day stage race through sand dunes, open gibber plains and clay flats. If you want to just dip your toes into the world of stage racing, you can opt to compete in The Little Red Run, where you will cover 150km over the 6 days. You’ll be breaking a sweat for a good cause as over $800,000 has been raised over the past four years for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation!

3. Crack up at the World’s most remote music festival.

This year the acrobatic, whip cracking Crackup Sisters will be your hosts at the Big Red Bash. Voted Australia’s favourite event at the 2016 Australian Event Awards, the 2017 line-up will showcase Aussie icons Missy Higgins, Lee Kernaghan, James Blundell, The McClymonts, Tania Kernaghan, Cate Cebrano, The Wolfe Brothers and MORE! 4. Bet on a winner at Australia’s longest camel race!

Celebrating its 21st birthday in 2017, the final of the Boulia Camel Races is 1500m long, making it the longest camel race in Australia! Get trackside and watch them hurtle down through the red dust, to the finish line or ….maybe even race the wrong way! Not only will you watch these ‘ships of the desert’, but can join the crowds for the camel tagging, event, classic yabby races and live music. Although a rare phenomenon, race go-ers may even grab a glimpse of the Mysterious Min Min Light….

5. Step back in time at the Old Wheels in Motion Rally.

While time travel may not be possible, you’ll still feel on the retro side, when you step back in time to celebrate Australia’s pioneering spirit! The Old Wheels in Motion Rally is a two day event held at the Queensland Heritage Park in Biloela which sees exhibitors from across Australia showcasing unique vintage machines! Get ready to watch blacksmithing demonstrations, the vintage tractor pull, balancing competitions and the grand parade whilst you browse these historical displays in the “land of the white cockatoo”.

6. Go behind the scenes at the Southern Hemisphere’s Largest Rodeo.

Take on the ultimate rodeo experience at Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo when you head behind the scenes with the Gold Seat and Chute Tour. The iconic Outback Queensland town of Birdsville which stands between the Diamantina River and Simpson Desert has a population of 120. In September, the population swells with crowds of over 6,000 visitors! If that doesn’t blow your mind, can you believe that during the event-  12,000 pies are sold at the iconic Birdsville Bakery! Their pie menu ranges from Australian draught, steak & kidney, kangaroo & claret, spicy chook and of course their famous curried camel pies! You can wash a pie down with one of the 80,000 cans of beer sold at the races, equivalent to the volume of 600 filled baths!

8. Dance the night away for a good cause at the National Bilby Day Festival.

The Australian Dunny Derby sponsored by Quilton is one of the quirkiest events in Outback Queensland! Get ready to watch spruced up outhouses roll for the title of the fastest dunny over the 200m course OR laugh at our hilarious mayors as they compete in the Mayoral Mayhem Challenge. If you aren’t feeling too wiped out from all the madness, you can take part in the biennial festivals Outback Iron Man, Sunset Extravaganza Dinner, Bushman’s Egg throwing or the Swag and Broom toss. 10. Transform into a colourful phenomenon at the Longreach Triathlon and Colour Dash.

For young families, less serious runners and walkers The Outback Colour Dash is perfect for you! A part of the Outback October Fiesta held in Longreach, you’ll run or walk this fun filled 5km course with while getting doused head to toe in coloured powders. Make sure you take your camera to capture all the colour bursting action (just be sure to keep it protected of course!). No prior training required!
