About Central West Region
There’s lots to love about the heart of the Outback.
Outback Queensland’s central west wears its history on its sleeve, proudly the birthplace of Qantas, Waltzing Matilda and Australia’s Labor Party.
Pioneering history is at its core of the central west and you can explore it by galloping horse-drawn stagecoach, sunset river cruises and live performances at the Stockman’s Hall of Fame.
For history that predates early settlers, the world’s largest collection of Australia dinosaur fossils can be found at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum in Winton.

Moura Miner’s Memorial is a memorial dedicated to all 50 mine workers who were tragically killed in either mine disasters or individual fatalities in the Moura Kianga Open Cuts and Underground Mines. The project has been developed by the MOURA Miners' Memorial Moura Community Progress Inc in consultation with the Moura Coal and Country Historical Society and Banana Shire Council. Under a domed roof, 50 shafts of light will beam to a central circle surrounded by terraced seating on the ‘coal wall’. The memorial will serve as the town’s gathering space to remember all lives lost since 1961. Viewers will enter the memorial via a ‘mine shaft’ entrance where the names of those who died are listed. At 9.50pm on the 5th of September 2014, at Angellala Creek Bridge approximately 30km south of Charleville on the Mitchell Highway, Australian transport history was made. A truck carrying 53 tonnes of ammonium nitrate caught fire, crashed and exploded at Angellala Creek. The blast radius was felt over 30km away and had Charleville locals thinking it was an earthquake. The force of the explosion injured eight people. Today, the road bridge has been rebuilt, but signs of the explosion still remain, and the story is told through an interpretive area at the site. Be sure to stop and read the full story when you pass through. Did you know that the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, which runs the Commissariat Store, is also a trustee of the Dig Tree in south west Queensland? You are welcome to visit the Dig Tree Reserve and reminded to tread carefully at this remote and fragile site. The site was refurbished in 2020. The health of the three heritage-listed trees is now protected by a boardwalk and remedial work to the nearby creek bank. Discreet signage tells the site’s tragic story. Three-dimensional replicas of all six blazes allow visitors to view the original messages carved in the trees. Some of the original blazes are still partly visible on the trees which can be viewed closely from the boardwalk. There is a conservation fee of $20 per vehicle or $60 per bus to visit the Dig Tree Reserve. If you are planning a visit to the Dig Tree, you can pre-pay the conservation fee on https://tinyurl.com/DigTreeFee Definitely one to add to your list to see when you come to Outback Queensland. You can find more information about the Dig Tree here http://www.thedigtree.com.au/ #outbackqueensland #outbackqldmagicmoments #digtree @rhs_qld #digtreereserve #burkeandwills #royalhistoricalsocietyofqueensland #rhsq #visitbulloo #explorebulloo #bullooshire @explorebulloo #bullooshirecouncil #getoutside #outback #staysafe #4wd #australianoutback #outbacklife #wheretonext #hittheroad #exploremore #roadtrip #fromwhereyoudratherbe #lovewherewelive #thisisqueensland #beautifulonedayperfectthenext #seeaustralia #holidayherethisyear
