About Far West Region

They say they do things better in the west, and the far west of Outback Queensland is no exception.

The farthest corner of Queensland delivers so much more than gibber flats; you’ll find red sand dunes, waterholes, and channel country that can see the whole area go under water.

Nothing is more iconic than standing atop Big Red at sunset, watching the sun dip from the first sand dune of the Simpson Desert (Munga-Thirri National Park).

Travel via desert roads for the opportunity to travel between three states without ever getting on a plane.

Instagram post 17931081289587522 We love to see your adventures in Outback Queensland.

Don't forget to #outbackqueensland or @outbackqueensland so we can see them.

Leave your mark on the Stonehenge address book located two kilometres out of town (on the Longreach side) of the sealed Stonehenge turn-off. When you see a wide, flat area and spy messages made from stones, you’ll know you’ve found it.

Please remember if leaving your mark not to remove stones already in use.

Instagram post 17881214876293319 Did you know Thargomindah was the first town in Australia, and third in the world, to produce hydro-electric power for street lighting by using the water pressure from the Artesian Basin? It was also the first town to have reticulated water in Australia.

In 1891 drilling commenced on a bore to supply the town with water, and in 1893 a good supply was struck at a depth of 2650ft (808mtrs) with the water coming from the bore at a temperature of 84°C (182°F). The water is forced out under pressure. it was recorded in 1924, that the bore had a daily output of 670,000 gallons with a 70-foot high plume of boiling water at full force, which registered a temperature of 86°C or 178°F. Today, its flow is about 340,000 gallons at 248kPa with a temperature of approximately 84°C.

The old bore was the source of energy for Australia's first hydro-electric scheme when in 1898 Thargomindah street lights were powered by means of generators coupled to a water turbine driven by the bore's natural water pressure.

Lighting in the town was connected daily from 5.30pm to 11.30pm. This method was in operation until 1951, when diesel generators were installed. The town was connected to the Grid system in 1988.
The new sealed Town Bore, which was commissioned in July 1999, has an average temperature of 82°C, is 820m deep, with a flow of 5,720,000 litres per day at a force of 1,200kPa.

Today you can take a self-guided tour to experience the hydroelectric power plant.
