About North West Region

Pack your hard-hat and sense of adventure – just four hours’ drive west of Townsville, Outback Queensland’s north west region begins.

It’s packed with dinosaur fossils, jaw-dropping scenery and a mining history that will lead you deep underground in Mount Isa.

Ancient history is the only kind served around here, from Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park where you can walk amongst 25-million-year-old World Heritage-listed sites at Riversleigh, to ancient underwater marine reptiles in Richmond, or the fossil collections in Hughenden.

Cloncurry, birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the destination for the first Qantas flight is also known for its minerals and gems.

Artesian baths, an award-winning caravan park and a lively calendar of events are huge attractions for travellers to the small town of Julia Creek.

No two days are the same in these parts: and in the north west a sense of adventure is the only packing essential.

A large waterhole exists within the Wilson River adjacent to the Noccundra Hotel, and is referred to as the Noccundra Waterhole. This waterhole is a popular campsite for locals and visitors alike.

The Barcoo Shire lays claim to the most exceptionally unique place in Australia and the world. It is the only place where two prominent and significate inland rivers, the Thomson and Barcoo meet to form a creek the Cooper Creek.

Rich in history, the Barcoo Shire has an outback experience to offer everyone. Along with unique rustic landscapes, distinctive flora and fauna, spectacular wildlife, freshwater fishing, golf, bird watching and stunning sunsets.

The welcoming three outback towns of Windorah, Jundah and Stonehenge can all be easily accessed via sealed roads and are located within a leisurely drive to the major towns of Longreach or Quilpie.
