About North West Region

Pack your hard-hat and sense of adventure – just four hours’ drive west of Townsville, Outback Queensland’s north west region begins.

It’s packed with dinosaur fossils, jaw-dropping scenery and a mining history that will lead you deep underground in Mount Isa.

Ancient history is the only kind served around here, from Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park where you can walk amongst 25-million-year-old World Heritage-listed sites at Riversleigh, to ancient underwater marine reptiles in Richmond, or the fossil collections in Hughenden.

No two days are the same in these parts: and in the north west a sense of adventure is the only packing essential.

Instagram post 17967556189575338 Make ‘At the Creek’, your first stop when visiting Julia Creek.

Located on the main street, ‘At the Creek’ centre offers a great selection of travel information brochures, maps and a range of souvenirs that can only be found in Julia Creek.

This tourist attraction engages in many audio and visual displays that focus on the themes of water, country and people. The centre is housed in historic railway fettler’s cottages and provide an authentic snapshot of Outback living.

@juliacreekqld Visitor Information is one of 21 centres across Outback Queensland. Many of these are looked after by passionate, local volunteers.
This week we recognise and celebrate all the volunteers for 'National Volunteer Week' (16-22 May). Thank you for your time and passion you bring every day to welcome and inspire all visitors to the Outback.

Instagram post 17951105995765522 When visitors describe their Quilpie holiday, there's always a common thread ... 'friendly locals and so much to do.'

If simple family fun and local connections are important, then Quilpie should top the list. With its roots in opal mining, Quilpie is overflowing with Aussie heritage, a vibrant art scene, dinosaurs and rich outback landscapes.

Located 953km west of Brisbane, it is well serviced by fully sealed roads, @rex.airlines twice-weekly flights and rail/bus connections with @queenslandrail.

Choose an adventure station stay or relax in your preferred motel or caravan park. For local-flavoured activities and adventures, look no further than Quilpie.
