The Thallon Rail Centre celebrates the town’s proud railway heritage and strong rural roots and is housed in a restored heritage Goods Shed dating from 1913. Originally built by Queensland Rail, the shed retains its original interior and was donated to the Thallon Progress Association, to house the Rail Centre. The building was relocated from the rail corridor to a central site in Thallon, where it has been transformed into an interpretive centre showcasing local rail history, memorabilia and stories from those who lived and worked on the railway.
Thallon was established as a rail town in 1911, and for much of the 20th century the railway was central to the town’s economy, supporting grain, wool and livestock industries and employing a large proportion of residents. The Rail Centre recognises this legacy and the role rail played in helping the Balonne region prosper. The Centre also features a mural of Wayne, a Thallon Local and former Queensland Rail Employee painted by renowned artist Drapl (Travis Vinson).
