The Burke and Wills Dig Tree is one of Australia’s most compelling national heritage icons, standing as an enduring symbol of pioneer grit, extreme Outback endurance, and historic exploration. Located on the northern bank of Cooper Creek on Nappa Merrie Station, this iconic site offers travellers a rare and tangible link to the famous 1860 to 1861 expedition led by Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Willis.

Visitors to the site can stand before the ancient Coolibah tree where the legendary message was carved, offering a poignant look into a pivotal moment in Australia History.

Just fifteen metres downstream stands the famous Face Tree, featuring a detailed portrait of Burke carved into the trunk in 1898. Boardwalks and interpretive paths allow visitors to experience the tranquil creek scenery much as early explorers saw it over 160 years ago, while protecting the delicate root system of these ancient trees.
