Outback Queensland to feature in six-part TV series
The Seven Network begins screening a six-part series on Outback Queensland this coming weekend.
The series, sponsored by the Outback Queensland Tourism Association and the Councils of Outback Queensland, will feature destinations as far afield as Birdsville and the Simpson Desert, to the Gulf of Carpentaria – and everything in between.
The unique spirit of the Outback is captured through its characters, events, towns and attractions.
Outback Queensland Tourism Association (OQTA) CEO, Denise Brown, said the series would deliver a taste of Outback Queensland into homes across Australia and help draw more visitors to the region.
“We know that more Australians than ever before are looking to travel in their own backyard and we’re helping put Outback Queensland front and centre on their travel plans.
“This six-part series is a fantastic way to showcase our stunning landscapes, vibrant events and the wide variety of experiences, including new product and attractions, that our region has to offer. For those contemplating a visit or those who may not have considered it, the message will be clear – if you think you know the Outback, think again!
“The series has been a real collaborative effort with OQTA, 17 local councils and operators, making this television moment a reality and delivering an important boost on our road to COVID-19 recovery,” Ms Brown said.
For the past two months, producer Greg Grainger and his camera team have been filming almost every Shire in Outback Queensland.
“There’s a special robust charm amongst the people we filmed,” says Grainger. “Our cameras follow them in their daily pursuits, from droving cattle to fossicking for fossils.”
Amongst Grainger’s favourite characters was S.T.Ruth of the Crack-up sisters. “The building she’s about to open in Winton, next to the Waltzing Matilda Museum, will show the public the realities of entertaining in the harsh conditions of the Outback.”
The stage-coaches of Longreach are another star feature. Richard McKinnon has configured his stagecoaches in the classic Cobb and Co five-horse combination to gallop at speed on the outskirts of Longreach.
“There’s so much going on in Queensland’s Outback,” says Grainger. “Long-lost World War II bombers, catching giant Barramundi, stitching Tambo Teddies together. From the Min Min Lights of Boulia to the bilby rehabilitation programme in Charleville.
Grainger’s cameras record new diggings in Richmond’s fields of fossils, fat-tailed Dunnarts in Julia Creek, and underground hospitals and the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Mount Isa.
Special events like the Shearers Shindig in Thargomindah and Opera Queensland’s performances in Longreach are captured.
From the bottle trees of Roma to the cotton fields of Dirranbandi, from the Cunnamulla Fella to the new Eromanga Natural History Museum, this series embraces life in the Outback.
The six-part series will be broadcast on Travel Oz on 7TWO from 8:30am Saturdays from 5 June 2021.
