Three Outback Queensland tourism operators were successful in winning their categories at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards held over the weekend.
Mount Isa Mines Rodeo won Gold in the Festival & Events Category, Fun Over Fifty won Gold in the Ecotourism category and Cobbold Gorge took out the Silver in the Hosted Accommodation category.
Hosted in Launceston in Tasmania, Outback Queensland was well represented with four operators flying the flag for the region.
The Waltzing Matilda Centre was also nominated for Best New Tourism Business but did not take home the win.
The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards are the tourism industry’s peak awards by recognising and promoting excellence in tourism.
General Manager of the Outback Queensland Tourism Association, Peter Homan was pleased to see Outback Queensland tourism operators recognised at the national awards.
“It’s fantastic to have four Outback Queensland operators nominated for their contribution not only to the Outback Queensland tourism industry but to the Australian tourism industry as well”.
“To be recognised on a national scale shows the hard work these operators continue to put into the Outback Queensland tourism industry, and they should be proud of their achievement at the Awards this year.”
In December 2018, the Queensland Premier announced 2019 as the Year of Outback Tourism, with a $3 million campaign planned to encourage tourists to visit Outback Queensland.
