Golfing in Outback Queensland is unlike any other golfing experience. Here, the fairways stretch across vast landscapes, sand greens replace traditional turf, and the local wildlife often joins you for a round. It’s a region that’s produced golfing greats – Greg Norman, aka “The Great White Shark,” was born in Mount Isa (although he didn’t grow up playing there).
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or looking for a different way to spend quality time outdoors, Outback Queensland offers a blend of challenge, camaraderie, and breathtaking scenery.
With courses set against a backdrop of red earth, open skies, and rugged natural terrain, golf in the outback is as visually stunning as it is challenging. But to win here you’ll need to adjust to unconventional techniques. Most clubs feature oiled sand greens due to the difficulty and cost of maintaining grass in this arid environment, with players using a smoother or raking tool to prepare the surface for smooth putting. Pack a sand wedge for chipping and long approaches, and a lob wedge to gain trajectory over hazards and trees – and don’t forget to check local club etiquette for rules of play at each course.
Beyond the game itself, Outback Queensland golf clubs are known for their warm hospitality and competitive spirit. There’s also lots of local club competitions where you can tee up and take a swing as you explore.
