The Big Rig

Roma – 479km west from Brisbane

Have fun and learn about the origins of Australia’s multi-billion-dollar oil and gas industry at the amazing Big Rig!

Along with original machinery, early rigs and the ‘Oil Patch’ prize challenge for the kids, you can climb the 40-metre tower for incredible views of the Outback landscape and enjoy a high-rise meander through Red River Gums on the Big Rig tree walk. When the sun goes down, head to the night show and watch history unfold on a big screen under the stars.

The Big Rig exhibits, collected by local Peter Keegan, are now considered of national significance as a record of the first oil and gas fields discovered in Australia. Take a self-guided day tour or let one of the knowledgeable Roma Riggers guide you through the story of the pioneer workers who strived through numerous challenges to succeed in the early days of the oil industry.
