Outback Industrial Heritage Accessible at the Big Rig

In Outback Queensland, history abounds amidst its vast landscapes. From the tales of pioneers to thousands of years of Indigenous culture, each corner holds stories waiting to be discovered.

The Outback Queensland town of Roma is known for its historic cattle saleyards, heritage listed Heroes’ Avenue, pioneer homestead, fun-filled horse racing and eclectic events.

One of the town’s most prominent attractions is heritage accessible at The Big Rig where you’ll find a fascinating and interactive insight into the hardships and heroic stories of early oil drilling and exploration in the region.

After a series of trials and tribulations, Roma Oil Corporation struck oil at their first well on Hospital Hill in 1927. Learn about the oil workers and pioneers at the wheelchair accessible Oil Patch Museum or relax with a tipple for an evening viewing of the historical drama played out on screen at The Big Rig’s outdoor theatre.

A wheelchair accessible lift provides a close-up view of the attraction’s 40-metre-high rig and access to a 100-metre-long Tree Walk set among ancient river red gum trees. In the evenings you can enjoy panoramic sunset views and a light show (check in advance for times and availability).

There’s accessible car parking near the centre entrance and an accessible bathroom with braille and tactile signage available onsite.

The Big Rig participates in the Companion Card program so talk to the venue staff when you book your entry ticket and tours.
