Accessible Experiences in Mount Isa

Abacus Motel Mount Isa

Outback Queensland offers unrivalled adventure and a warm welcome for all travellers.

From accessible rooms to exciting attractions, Outback Queensland experiences are designed to provide comfort and enjoyment for every explorer.

Among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges on the banks of the Leichhardt River the town of Mount Isa is known as the ‘oasis of the Outback’ and is a melting pot of culture and industry.

Among its many highlights are the spectacular Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park, the world heritage-listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields and the Outback at Isa complex, including the award-winning Riversleigh Fossil Centre.

Things to Do

It’s also home to the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo one of world’s biggest rodeo events. The accessible venue at Buchanan Park features concreted pathways, ramps and designated wheelchair areas with a collection and drop-off point and designated parking nearby.

Venture underground to explore Mount Isa’s historic subterranean hospital, built during WW2 in preparation for a possible invasion of the region. The Underground Hospital and Museum tour offers intriguing wartime stories along with an insight to its construction and the people who worked there.

The passageways are wide enough for pushchairs, wheelchairs, and mobility devices. Some assistance may be required as the flooring is constructed from compacted soil and is a little uneven in places.

The tour includes a projected presentation that features a loud air raid siren and red lights. The lighting in the tunnels is slightly dim so talk to the booking team or guide if you need assistance.

Access to the Tent House is via a ramp, and while not all the heritage-built rooms are wheelchair accessible, they can all be viewed. The Beth Anderson Museum is fully accessible and there’s dedicated accessible parking and male and female toilets available. The attraction participates in the Companion Card program.

Where to Stay
