You’re in for a month-watering treat in the Outback!
We’ve put together a list of 11 bakeries that we think are worth stopping for in Outback Queensland! Sweets and savouries, fresh bread and rolls, coffee and drinks… there’s bound to be something that takes your fancy.
In the main street of Winton you’ll find the Balamara Bakery. It’s the go-to place for breakfast with bacon and egg breaky rolls, croissants, and coffee! Make sure to also try one of their sweet treats, like the hummingbird or carrot cake. The bakery also creates some cake masterpieces!

Situated in the heart of Cloncurry is the Cloncurry Bakery. Enjoy a fresh sandwich, try one of their pies or pastries, or indulge in the “best hedgehog slice in Australia” according to a review on TripAdvisor! They also serve good coffee.

Not your average patisserie, Merino Bakery located in Longreach, has put an outback spin on old school treats. The bakery is a favourite with locals and guests alike, and they have a wide selection of products for you to try, including coffee, salads, pies, and cakes. “Brilliant coffee”, “delicious pies”, and “good old fashion sausage rolls” are some of the customer’s reviews!

Make sure to add Birdsville to your outback route, as you won’t want to miss Birdsville Bakery! T was originally opened by the late Robert “Dusty” Miller, who invented the curried camel pie which made headlines across Australia! Stop by this bakery to enjoy barista-made coffee, cool drinks, fresh bread, hot pies, pastries, slices, and cakes.

Located just southwest of St George is the Dirranbandi Bakery. Natalia not only runs the bakery but is also a baker herself! And with her Russian heritage, you’ll get to try some sweet Russian treats. Not to mention the homemade pies, flaky croissants, vanilla slice, and European biscuits!

Looking for some good old country hospitality and gourmet food options? Then you’ll want to stop in at the Heinemann’s Country Bakery located in Charleville. The bakery and coffee shop offers gourmet salads, tarts, salad rolls, lunch options, and of course all the sweet treats!

Located on the main road through the town of Blackall is Schluter’s Bakery. Make sure to find some spare cash (no eftpos availability) because you’ll want to try their tasty and flavoursome pies and sausage rolls which they’ve been highly commended for!

Spot the dinosaur! If you can spot Mutt the Muttaburrasaurus on Stansfield Street in Hughenden, then you’ll know you’re close to the Holdens Bakery. Cakes, fresh bread, rolls, pies, pastries, sausage rolls, sweets, and donuts are what’s on offer. The bakery prides themselves on the freshness and quality of their locally made products.

Bakearoma is a family-owned bakery and coffee lounge that is located in the heart of Roma. You can eat-in or take-away, choose from multiple sweet and savoury options, and enjoy a nice breakfast or lunch. And with their trained baristas, you’ll also enjoy a good cuppa.

In the town of Barcaldine, you get the best of both worlds at the Satisfaction Bakery & Café. The bakery offers you sweets treats and tasty savory options. And the café has an extensive breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu which you’ll want to check out – there’s gluten free and vegetarian menu options available too!

Visiting Cunnamulla? Then swing by the Cunnamulla Bakery for “THE BEST pies in Australia” (Google review), along with fresh bread, sweet treats, cakes, sandwiches, sausage rolls, and coffee. Need we say more!?
